Spring has arrived!! The long winter has taken a toll on us all, especially mailboxes. As you replace or install new mailboxes we ask that you make sure that it is marked with larger reflective numbers. Your house or mailbox not being clearly marked could delay potentially lifesaving help from finding your house in a timely manner. Both the fire and police department may relay on mutual aid from other agencies depending on the emergency and if we have trouble locating your residence they undoubtedly will.

During the first 3 months of 2014 we have seen an increase of serious drug arrests taking place within town. This is an alarming trend that is occurring throughout the seacoast. This year we have arrested people possessing heroin, crack cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms, acid, and marijuana. Statistically increased drug activity is connected with increased criminal activity (theft, burglaries). Please continue to be vigilant and lookout for your neighbors.

As warm weather creeps in outdoor activity enthusiasts will soon be on the move. Here are some safety reminders to help make sure everyone sharing the roadway can do so safely.

By RSA 265:143a, motorists passing a bicyclist must leave at least 3 feet of clear space between the motor vehicle and the bicycle and one additional foot of clearance required for every 10 miles per hour above 30 miles per hour. (40MPH= 4 feet of passing space)

Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. Bicycles are vehicles (RSA 165:143) Obey signs and rules of the road including the correct use of legal hand signals.

Cyclists must keep right? Not necessarily according to RSA 265:144. There are many common operational situations where cyclists must claim the lane for their own safety, including:

(a) When overtaking and passing another bicycle or any other vehicle proceeding in the same direction.
(b) When preparing for or making a left turn at an intersection or into a driveway.
(c) When proceeding straight in a place where right turns are permitted.
(d) When necessary to avoid hazardous conditions, including, but not limited to, fixed or moving objects, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, broken pavement, glass, sand, puddles, ice, or opening doors of parked vehicles.

Wear bright clothing. Reflective clothing is required at night (RSA 265:144,XII)

Wearing a helmet can prevent a head injury. A helmet is required for those under 16 years of age (RSA 265:144,X)
