Free on Friday? Want to help feed KC's hungry children? Attend the KAFE Summit!

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will join with Harvesters and other area partners to host the Kids Area Feeding Event or KAFE Summit on Friday, March 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Southeast Community Center, 4201 E. 63rd St. The City and partners urge anyone who is available and would like to be a part of the solution to sign up for and attend this summit.

Nationally, 21 million children receive free or reduced lunch during the school year, but many children still go hungry when not in school. The KAFE Summit will show local residents and groups how to get involved in existing programs designed to help these children by becoming a sponsor, a meal site or a volunteer.

“We have young people throughout Kansas City who are in need of a healthy meal,” said Councilman Scott Wagner, First District at Large.  “KAFE represents a first step in providing a healthy future for the future of our city.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides federal funded, nutritious meals to children from low-income families through the Summer Food Service Program and the National School Lunch Program’s Seamless Summer Option. However, many in Kansas City do not know how to access or support these programs.

Councilman Wagner and Councilman Michael Brooks, Fifth District, will launch the summit with an introduction to KAFE. Other presenting partners will include representatives from the City’s Health and Parks and Recreation departments, USDA, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, United Way of Greater Kansas City, Emmanuel Family & Child Development, Open Door Ministries, Community Food and Nutrition Assistance and the Power House Ministries Team.

For more information on the KAFE Summit or to pre-register, contact Kimberly Randolph, legislative aide to Councilman Scott Wagner, at 816-513-6503, or email [email protected]
