(HOUSTON, TX)- Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a street racing initiative this past weekend in west Harris County, resulting in the arrest of nine individuals.

The initiative was held on the same weekend as one of the biggest drag racing events in the country- TX2K. The event takes place in Austin County and draws thousands of spectators, many of which use the streets of Harris County to do racing of their own.

Lacadie, Derek, DOB 03/08/83
Eveleigh, Casey, DOB 08/21/86

Street racing is a class B misdemeanor, with maximum punishment of a $2,000 fine, 180 days in jail and driver’s license suspension.

Repeat offenders can be charged with a second degree felony, which could result in up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

In street racing, passengers can be punished as severely as the driver. Spectators can also be fined.

The crime also becomes a felony if the street racing results in serious bodily injury or death.
