Victim #1: Name withheld, 8 year old male, Gilroy resident
Details:
On 03/13/2014 at approximately 06:15 pm, Gilroy Police Officers responded to the intersection of Tenth Street and Princevalle Street for a report of a vehicle vs. bicyclist collision. Officers arrived within two minutes and located the 8 year old victim conscious and alert with family members. Gilroy Fire Department Personnel arrived a short time after to render aid to the eight-year old. The victim was transported to an area trauma center via air-ambulance with non-life threating injuries. He is expected to survive.
The male driver of the vehicle was also on scene. The driver did not appear to be driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Preliminary information revealed that the 8 year old bicyclist rode onto to traffic against a red light and was not wearing a helmet.
Parents are reminded to be alert when riding bicycles with small children. A minor under the age of 18 is required to wear a proper-fitted helmet when riding upon a street.
