Utility Scam: Impostors calling and threatening utility shut off if immediate payment is not made.
Beverly Hills utility customers are receiving calls regarding a fraudulent ‘Green Dot’ scam. The caller identifies him/herself as a City representative demanding the customer immediately pay for an outstanding utility bill. The caller informs the customer that their utility (water, gas or electricity) will be shut off if they do not receive immediate payment.
The scam is done through a pre-paid Green Dot moneypak debit card. The caller asks the victim to purchase a Green Dot card, and provide the number. At this time, there is no way to trace scammers using the Green Dot, as the program was developed for people who do not use banking institutions.
If you receive such calls, please contact the Beverly Hills Police Department at (310) 550-4951.
