A Stabbing and Unlawful Assembly Occur on Del Playa in Isla Vista

A Lompoc resident is charged with attempted murder following a stabbing last night, March 8, at a residence in the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive. A fight broke out at the residence and 18-year-old Kuriyan Summers-Dickinson stabbed a 20-year-old victim in the stomach. The victim is from Rhode Island and was visiting his brother in Isla Vista for the weekend. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and is now in stable condition. The suspect attempted to flee the scene but was arrested shortly after by Sheriff’s Deputies with the Isla Vista Foot Patrol. He is charged with attempted murder.

While Sheriff’s Deputies were attending to the stabbing incident, a large crowd gathered in the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive. Shortly after midnight, Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a suspect who was jumping on top of vehicles that were driving down Del Playa Drive and yelling which not only caused property damage to the vehicles but also incited the crowd. After a short foot pursuit, 20-year-old Otis Dezjuan Washington, a UCSB Student, was arrested by Sheriff’s Deputies. He is charged with vehicle tampering and resisting arrest.

While in the process of making the arrest, a large crowd of several hundred people gathered around the deputies and began chanting and throwing bottles. Additional Sheriff’s Deputies from the Santa Barbara and Carpinteria stations, along with UCSB Police Officers and California Highway Patrol Officers responded to help. Several residents assisted the deputies by helping hold back the hostile crowd until more help could arrive.

At this point, the crowd was estimated to be more than one thousand people and was deemed an unlawful assembly. Law enforcement worked together to push back the crowd and close down the street. The crowd was ordered to disperse several times. Pepper spray and batons were used to push back individuals who refused to disperse. Another UCSB student, 21-year-old Tomas Delaveau, spat on an officer and was arrested for battery on a peace officer.

It took about an hour to disperse the crowd and restore order to the Isla Vista area. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind Isla Vista residents that they are all a part of the effort to keep the community a safe place.
