Car Seat Exchange Program Saved by the Medic Alert Foundation

The Turlock Police Department was at risk of losing their car seat exchange program. The program was established in an effort to provide or replace child safety seats to children of parents who were financially unable to purchase a safety seat. In the past, there were grants available to fund the purchase of these safety seats, but due to shrinking budgets, those grants have disappeared.

The Medic Alert Foundation recently hosted a safety fair that our Traffic Safety Car Seat Technicians attended. During the fair, the Medic Alert Foundation heard about the dilemma and graciously agreed to donate thirty-two new, high quality safety seats of various types valued at over $1,900 to the Turlock Police Department. This is approximately the same number of seats that are replaced annually.

The car seat exchange program solely focuses on the safety and protection of children in motor vehicles. The Turlock Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is an active participant in child occupant safety. There are several employees that are trained technicians who have attended a forty hour school and maintain their national certifications annually. This allows technicians to install, diagnose deficiencies, and train parents in the proper use of child safety seats.

Sergeant Neil Cervenka, Traffic Safety Unit supervisor said: “The car seat exchange program would’ve ended for the Turlock area had it not been for the Medic Alert Foundation. Thank you, Medic Alert Foundation for helping keep children in our community safe.”

There will be a public acceptance of the safety seats on March 11, 2014 at 10:00 A.M., in the main training room at Turlock PSF, 244 N. Broadway, Turlock. Chief Robert Jackson will meet with executive members of Medic Alert and formally accept the donation.
