San Mateo Police Detectives arrested a suspect Wednesday for disturbing behavior towards young girls, after a break in the case through the use of Social Media.

The victim, a 15 year-old female San Mateo Resident, was standing on the sidewalk in the unit block of North Claremont Street on the morning of Feb 18th when the suspect approached her from behind and spoke to her in Spanish, soliciting her for sex. The victim refused the request, and was able to leave the area.

SMPD Officers responded to the area at about 8:20 am, within a few minutes of the incident, and made a thorough check of the area for the suspect – a Hispanic male in his 40’s. The suspect was not located, but officers were able to obtain video surveillance form a nearby store, and confirmed the man in the video was the suspect in this case.

The image from video was published through various social media platforms, with a request for the public’s help. Two additional victims (12 year-old females from San Mateo) responded to the SMPD request and image they received via Facebook, and identified the same suspect as having inappropriate contact with them. Detectives completed additional investigation, and identified the suspect as 41 year-old Roberto “Guadalupe” Micalax of San Mateo.

Micalax contacted an SMPD Officer on Wednesday afternoon March 5th, knowing that he was wanted for questioning on this case. Micalax was arrested, and ultimately transported to San Mateo County Jail on Charges of Child Annoyance, Solicitation for Sex in Public, and Assault with the Intent to Commit a Sex Crime.

SMPD thanks YOU, our public for your help on this case! This is an excellent example of how the community can assist Law Enforcement though the use of Social Media.
