Skywarn Spotters Course and Statewide Tornado Drill This Week!

Ohio’s Severe Weather Awareness Week is March 2 – 8, 2014. Thunderstorms affect Ohio the most in the spring and summer months. These storms can produce heavy rainfall, flash flooding, damaging winds, lightning, hail and tornadoes. To increase awareness, a statewide tornado drill will be held on Wednesday March 5th at 9:50am. Wooster, Rittman and Orrville will be sounding tornado sirens at 9:50am on March 5th. Please be aware that this is just a test.

Also on March 5th, the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency is sponsoring a free SkyWarn Spotters Course at the University of Akron at Wayne College at 1901 Smucker Rd., Orrville, OH 44667.
Registration begins at 5:00pm; the class is from 6:00 – 8:00pm in the Student Life Building - JM Smucker Multipurpose Room.

Skywarn spotters are a vital part of the National Weather Service warning system. To become a spotter, attendance at a storm spotter class is required. Please RSVP to [email protected] or call (330) 262-9817 if you plan to attend. Seating is limited. Participants will be issued a Skywarn card and given spotter information at the training.

Local first responders and disaster volunteer organizations will have information booths available during this event.
