The following is a crime prevention alert sent by email only, there is no associated text message.

The Internal Revenue Service is warning consumers of a telephone scam that has appeared throughout the country. The caller falsely claims to be from the IRS and may even recite the last four digits of the victim’s social security number, which are now widely available because of their overuse by many companies as a “security” check. Victims are told they owe money to the IRS that must be paid immediately or the victim will be arrested, have their driver’s license suspended, or some other false penalty. Victim’s are typically directed by the scammer to pay with a pre-loaded credit card or wire transfer.

These types of calls have been received by Livingston County residents.

The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers via email or telephone. Anyone receiving such a phone call should refuse to provide ANY information to the caller and hang up the phone.
