Winter Storms Headed Towards the City of Torrance
Are you ready for some rain? The winter storms headed towards Torrance this week could be the wettest in almost two years according to the National Weather Service. Regardless of how much rain is expected to fall this week, now is the time to prepare for the wet weather.
Prepare for the Rain
Many roads are the most slippery when it first starts to rain because oil and dust have not yet washed away. Slow down at the first sign of rain or moisture on the road. Turn on your windshield wipers, low-beam headlights and defroster. SLOW DOWN AND INCREASE YOUR FOLLOWING DISTANCE!
If you are involved in a collision, call 9-1-1 if anyone is hurt. Safely move your vehicle out of the traffic lane if there are no injuries. Exchange driver license, registration card, evidence of financial responsibility and current address information with the driver of the other vehicle or the other person involved.
Most importantly, complete your errands and stock up on essential household needs before the storms arrive to avoid any unnecessary driving in the rain.
Prepare Your Car for the Rain
- Wipers - Inspect the condition of your wipers because they are a major tool in the rainy season. Pay attention to the rubber. If the rubber is brittle or cracked, it should be replaced.
- Headlamps – Make sure both are working correctly. Use your low beam headlights at night and when it rains. Do not drive using only your parking lights. Remember that effective January 1, 2005, headlamps are required to be turned on during daylight hours if the windshield wipers of your vehicle are in use while you're driving.
- Brakes and Tires – These are arguably the most important safety components of any car. Preparing your car for the rain also means making sure your brakes are functioning properly and that the tread on your tires is not worn which could affect your vehicles traction.
The Torrance Police Department Traffic Division wants you to remember that the first rain of the season, even a light rain, often leads to dangerous conditions in which to operate your vehicle. If you must drive in the rain, always operate your vehicle at a safe speed for the conditions and be aware of your surroundings. Remember that arriving at your destination safely, not quickly, is what’s important.
