Officers receive Region C Award
Rutherford County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark McCracken, K-9 “ACE” and Lake Lure Police Officer Scott Haynes were nominated and received a Region C Award on Tuesday (2-18-14) at The West End Grill, for their work in locating an autistic male on November 25, 2013.
Lt. Warren Sprouse presented the award to Deputy McCracken and Officer Haynes.
Region C is comprised of law enforcement agencies from Rutherford, Polk, McDowell and Cleveland Counties. Region-C recognizes officers who go above and beyond the call of duty.
On Nov.25, 2013, Deputy McCracken, his K-9 “ACE”, along with Officer Scott Haynes of Lake Lure Police Department responded to Conner Road in Lake Lure for a disturbance call.
Officer Haynes was first to arrive on scene and was informed that a 15 year old autistic boy had left on foot before he arrived.
Once officers gathered the information, they knew the boy did not have adequate clothing for the cold weather conditions that night.
Deputy McCracken deployed his K-9 “ACE”.
Deputy McCracken and Officer Haynes started searching for the boy in the wooded area near the home.
After about thirty minutes of searching, the boy was located by the Officers and ACE about a mile and a half from his home, on top of a mountain.
The boy was found curled up under a rock near a four wheeler trail half clothed. The boy was transported off the mountain on an ATV by Bills Creek Fire Dept. and checked out by EMS.
Thank you to Lake Lure Police Dept., Bills Creek Fire Dept. and EMS for the help they provided in locating this young boy.
