A local man was arrested Friday after he was caught driving a motorcycle that turned out to be stolen.
Jeremy Daniel Bennett, 32, of 140 Smith St., was taken into custody at his residence around 1:45 p.m. and charged with theft by receiving more than $1,000, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Bennett, who is on parole, remained in custody Tuesday in lieu of $3,500 bond and is set to appear March 4 in district court.
According to reports, GCSD Deputy Shane Tatum was dispatched to the area of Nickens Street shortly before noon in reference to a male suspect “racing around the neighborhood” on a motorcycle.
Tatum made contact with a resident, 52, in the area who described the motorcycle and the suspect and the deputy located Bennett outside his residence and he admitted he had been riding a motorcycle earlier.
The suspect’s mother pointed to an open shed in the yard and Tatum could see a motorcycle inside with no license plate.
The mother gave consent for him to enter the shed to check and he ran the vehicle identification number of the motorcycle, a maroon 1986 Honda Shadow, and discovered it had been reported stolen Jan. 29 by a female resident, 48, of Fifth Street in Hot Springs. The value of the motorcycle was estimated at $2,200.
