Multi-Agency Response to Fatal Industrial Accident in San Leandro Under Investigation by Cal/OSHA

For Immediate Release

February 13, 2014

At 9:31AM Alameda County firefighters responded to report of a medical emergency at the Volvo Construction Equipment Facility located at 1944 Marina Boulevard in San Leandro. Firefighters arrived within minutes to find an adult male employee pinned underneath a front loader with no signs of life.

In accordance with standard operating procedures related to an injury and/or fatality as a result of an industrial accident, Alameda County firefighters made notifications to the San Leandro Police Department, the Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) and the Alameda County Sheriffs Office (ACSO) Coroner's Bureau.

To assist the ACSO Coroner's Bureau in removing the individual from underneath the heavy equipment, firefighters used cribbing (varying lengths of hardwood used to stabilize vehicles during extrication incidents) to secure the tires of the front loader. A mechanical hoist was also used to lift the front loader, which weighed approximately seven tons.

There were no additional reports of injuries to Volvo Construction employees, firefighters or community members.

The cause of the incident is under investigation by Cal/OSHA.
