Alert

WMPD STRONGLY urge motorist to stay off of roadways, not to travel unless an emergency until surface temps reach above freezing today.

West Monroe Police STRONGLY urge motorist to stay off of roadways and not to travel unless an emergency, until surface temperatures reach above freezing today. Precipitation is continuing to fall in the form of freezing rain, roadway conditions are continuing to deteriorate and have become very dangerous overnight and are continuing to ice-over even further this morning. Elevated portions of the roadways are particularly dangerous; along I-20; Stella/Mill South 5th street, including the elevated portion east & west bound over the Ouachita river is particularly dangerous at this point. The Thomas Road over pass also has ice forming on it at this hour. Although it seems to be worsening at this hour, just as soon as temperatures rise above freezing the conditions should rapidly improve, however this is not predicted to begin until after 1pm today.

West Monroe Police & the Louisiana State Police urges motorists to make safety their top priority and be mindful of the latest weather and travel conditions before deciding to hit the road. Motorists are strongly encouraged to stay off the roadways until driving conditions improve.

The wet precipitation on the roadway can freeze and create “black ice,” a thin, nearly invisible coating of ice that forms on paved surfaces during low temperatures. In addition, the rain/sleet can cause bridges and overpasses to ice quickly, particularly in the evening hours when temperatures are below or near the freezing mark. This type of weather pattern can be dangerous for motorists, as most are not accustomed to driving in these conditions.

As a reminder, please remember that 911 is for life threatening emergencies and crimes in progress, please do not inadvertently overwhelm the 911 system by reporting weather related information or roadway hazards during this potential weather event.

Instructions:

If you experience difficulties or witness hazardous situations while on the highway, notify your local State Police Troop office by dialing *LSP (*577) or contacting the West Monroe Police Department at 318-396-2722. You may also call the Louisiana 511/211 service for updated information.
