(Etowah County, Alabama) Winter weather in Etowah County sharply increased service calls for personnel at the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office.

The number of service calls received on Tuesday, January 28, quadrupled from the previous day. On Tuesday, 1,035 calls were answered in the Etowah County 9-1-1 dispatch center. The previous day, Monday, January 27, only 201 calls were received.

Radio traffic also increased among Etowah County first responders. Approximately 6,595 radio transmissions were broadcast on Tuesday compared to 1,694 transmissions on Monday.

Here is a break-down of various calls received relating to the winter weather beginning Tuesday, January 28 and ending on Friday morning, January 31, 2014:

Wrecks – 269
Stranded Motorists – 80
Assists/Transporting Citizens (includes essential medical personnel) – 110
Transporting Students from Area Schools – 65
Transporting Citizens on Rural Transportation Buses - 12

“These numbers are just a small representation of the calls that public safety personnel answered over a three day period,” says Sheriff Todd Entrekin. “Everyone is to be commended for their tireless efforts and hard work in keeping the public safe in the middle of hazardous weather conditions.”
