Advisory

Steuben goes to Watch ORANGE level at 9am as scheduled

The Steuben County Commissioners in cooperation with the Sheriff, Steuben County Highway and the Steuben County Emergency Management have reduced the Snow Warning level and replaced it with a Snow WATCH Level for Steuben County effective at 9AM this morning as scheduled 1/28/2014 and continuing indefinitely. Driving is to be essential travel only. SOME COUNTY ROADS ARE AT ONE LANE. PLEASE BE ALERT FOR THOSE AREAS AND USE CAUTION WHEN ENCOUNTERING OTHER ONCOMING MOTORISTS. Should you require travel, please drive slower than normal, give yourself plenty of travel time and plenty of stopping distance between other vehicles and at intersections. If a roadway appears snow plugged this morning, find an alternate route of travel rather than attempting passage. State and County Highway departments will be out all day clearing roadways and it is expected to have everything fully opened up by late this afternoon, weather and traffic conditions permitting. County Highway has reported that some county roads this morning are requiring the use of pay loaders to remove the snow, thus taking more time than a typical plow to open those roadways.

Wind chill temperatures are expected to reach -20 this afternoon. Winds will be 10-15 MPH out of the west. Please prepare when going outside.

Conditions will be monitored throughout the day and reviewed again at 4:00 P.M. An update will be released today on conditions by 5:00 P.M. Regular media outlets plus the Steuben County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, www.steubensheriff.com and Nixle text alerts will be used to alert everyone of any updates.

WATCH
Means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a "watch" local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations.
