Azusa area: Man arrested after assaulting bar employees

Deputies are seeking additional witnesses regarding an incident at a bar in unincorporated Azusa.

On Friday, January 24, 2014, at about 10:15 p.m., deputies from San Dimas Sheriff’s Station were called to “El Palenque” bar, 17010 Gladstone Avenue.  Witnesses said a 39 year old male (later identified as Lunden Lewis of Azusa) was intoxicated, causing a disturbance at the pool table, and was asked by the bar owner to leave the bar.  The owner escorted Lewis outside, but as they reached the front door, he noticed Lewis still had a beer bottle.  The owner told Lewis he could not take the beer outside.  Witnesses said Lewis swung the beer bottle at the victim (bar owner), grazing his right ear.  A uniformed security guard pushed the suspect away from the bar owner.  Lewis then brandished a locked blade folding knife at the security guard and owner, and was holding the knife in a threatening manner.  Deputies were very nearby and responded in time to see the suspect holding the knife, while the security guard detained him at gunpoint.  When deputies arrived on scene, the suspect dropped the knife and was taken into custody without incident.  There were no injuries reported.  Lunden Lewis of Azusa was booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Bottle, Knife), and held at San Dimas Station in lieu of $30,000 bail.  Follow up investigation will be conducted by detectives assigned to San Dimas Station.  Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to call San Dimas detectives at (909)450-2700.
