Miramar announces Deputy Chief Keith Tomey as Interim Fire Chief.

After an exemplary 29 year career with the City of Miramar that began in 1984, Fire-Rescue Department Chief Fred Kunz will retire at the end of January.

Assuming Kunz’s duties will be Deputy Chief Keith Tomey who has been appointed the Interim Fire Chief. Tomey has dedicated 30 years to the fire service – 27 of them with Miramar. He has a Masters in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix, a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Barry University and an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from Broward College.

City Manager Kathleen Woods-Richardson commented that “Miramar has been blessed to have talented staff with vested interest in the Miramar community. Chief Kunz leaves the Fire Department with a solid foundation affording Interim Fire Chief Tomey an excellent head start to make Miramar a safer place for all our residents.”

Chief Tomey earned his Executive Fire Officer from the National Fire Academy in 2005, and in 2011, the Center of Public Safety Excellence designated Chief Tomey as a Chief Fire Officer. These honors demonstrate a high level of competence, professionalism, community service achievement, and a high level of standards, ethics and conduct. Chief Tomey has extensive certifications in emergency management through the US Fire Administration and advanced incident command certifications from FEMA.

A change of command ceremony has been scheduled for January 29th at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Lakes Community Center.
