An investigation into shots fired early Friday led to the arrest of a convicted felon on drug and firearms charges.
Jeffrey Wayne Mitchell, 43, who lists an address of 184 Grimmett Loop, No. 9, was taken into custody shortly after 12:30 a.m. and charged with felony counts of simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, punishable by up to life in prison, and possession of a firearm by certain persons, punishable by up to 20 years.
Mitchell, who was previously convicted of a felony in 2002 in Pulaski County, was being held without bond and is set to appear Jan. 28 in Garland County District Court.
According to reports, shortly after midnight, Garland County sheriff’s Deputy Clayton Green was dispatched to the area of Lake Hamilton and Lakeland drives regarding a male suspect in an older white pickup allegedly shooting a gun out of the window.
A few minutes later, Green and Sgt. Scott West arrived in the area and saw a white 1998 Chevrolet pickup coming off Lake Hamilton onto Lakeland that matched the description so they stopped it in the 100 block of Lakeland.
They made contact with the driver, identified as Mitchell, and his female passenger, 21, and asked the passenger where they were coming from. She stated the apartments on Lake Hamilton Drive and when asked if there was a gun in the vehicle, she said she wasn’t sure.
Cpl. Josh Cannon had arrived to assist and asked Mitchell it there were any weapons in the vehicle and he reportedly stated, “There is a gun under the seat that belongs to my roommate.”
Mitchell was then asked to step out and a 9 mm pistol with one round in the chamber was located under Mitchell’s seat. Mitchell was patted down for safety and a prescription pill bottle with someone else’s name on it was found in his front pocket.
The bottle was found to contain 18 Oxycodone pills resulting in the simultaneous possession charge. It was noted the vehicle was released to the female passenger at Mitchell’s request.
