Today marks the 20 year anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake. How are YOU prepared?

Remembering the Northridge Earthquake 20 years Later

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Northridge earthquake, which damaged and destroyed thousands of homes and buildings in Los Angeles County and resulted in dozens of deaths. The 6.7 magnitude earthquake shook most of Southern California and caused an estimated $25 billion in damage. The earthquake caught most people completely off guard.  As we remember that day, it should serve as an example to everyone how important it is to be prepared for an emergency.

The Torrance Police Department Emergency Services Office encourages all residents to be informed and prepared in the event that a disaster strikes. Here are some simple ways you can ensure your safety and survival during an emergency:

Establish a kit of emergency supplies:  Include in your kit: water, non-perishable foods, a first aid kit, important documents, and medications.

Make a plan: A plan can ensure that you and your family members will know what to do and how to communicate when an emergency occurs.

Be informed: Educate yourself and family on the potential threats and disasters that may happen. It is important to know where to go and what to do for help.

Get involved: You can better prepare yourselves and your community through the City’s Disaster Services Volunteer Program.

You can never be too prepared when it comes to an emergency. Help protect yourself and others by following these simple practices.
