Advisory

Residential burglaries are on a rise in YOUR neighborhood.

The Torrance Police Department has seen an increase in residential burglaries throughout the city, but specifically pockets in the north end of the city, southeast portion of the city, and the south end of the city (See attached PDF).  According to recent witness and evidence identification of suspicious persons, these crimes are being committed by persons of varied race, color, or ethnic background.  Although primarily male, there are often females involved or associated with these crimes; as the driver of the associated suspect vehicle.

We would like your help identifying and calling in suspicious activity.

HERE IS WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

  • Strangers knocking on doors.  Criminals are knocking on doors to see if anyone is home.  When there is no answer, the criminal walks to the back of the residence and breaks in.

  • If you do answer your door, suspicious stories of why they are at your door (i.e. they are looking for someone who does not live there).

  • Multiple persons: Some may even be female or high school age.  Other suspects may be waiting outside or in vehicles talking on cell phones.

  • Unfamiliar persons or vehicles in your neighborhood.  Recently, an unfamiliar vehicle was backed into a neighbors driveway but wasn’t reported by the neighbor witness and the house was later found burglarized.

  • Most residential burglaries occur during the day (weekdays).

WHAT WE NEED YOU TO DO:

“SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING”

  • Time is a factor, immediately call the Torrance Police Department if you see something you consider suspicious at 310-328-3456 or in an emergency 9-1-1.

  • If you are home during the day, be aware of who is approaching your neighbor’s residence or knocking on your door.  Let the person know someone is home without opening the door.

  • Take note of suspect descriptions such as gender, race, clothing, height, weight, age, hair, eye color, tattoos, etc.

  • If possible, take note of vehicle descriptions, license plates, and direction of travel.

The Torrance Police Department believes that the increase in residential burglaries are directly related to Assembly Bill 109, aka: “Criminal Realignment.”  Please take the time to review the informational video about AB 109 and the “See Something, Say Something” Campaign at www.safeandsecuretorrance.com
