Each week we post scams that were reported to NSPD. The goal of this program is to educate the public on recent scams we have investigated.
Highlighted Scams:
Scam 1: Victim received a phone call from subject asking to purchase a Green Dot Money Pak Paper Scratch Card and place $285 on the card. Once the subject received the card he would place $3,000,000 into her bank account. Green Dot MoneyPak cards are prepaid cards that can be purchased at convenience stores and used in place of credit cards.
Scam 2: Victim received an email from subject claiming to be a representative of Monster Energy Drinks. Victim was asked to place a decal on his vehicle to advertise for Monster Energy Drink. Victim would receive $300 / week for having the advertisement on his vehicle. However, the subject first asked the victim to transfer $1200 to Alm KARIN and $1399 to KARIN via Western Union. This is known FRAUD that has been occurring since 2012.
TIPS TO PREVENT BECOMING A VICTIM:
If you are asked to pay any money out of pocket before a prize will be released to you or service completed, it is a scam. It is also illegal under federal law.
Never pay money from your bank account or through money wire payments or payment cards like Green Dot, MoneyPak, PayPal, or any other cards or form of payment unless it is to someone you trust and are familiar with.
Never provide personal information over the phone or by email unless you are confident it is to a reliable source.
Be suspicious of anyone asking you to send money.
