Police Investigate Shooting on Liberty High School Campus

Jackson police are investigating a Thursday afternoon shooting at Liberty Technology Magnet High School.

At 2:21 p.m. Thursday, Jackson police received a call of a shooting at Liberty Technology Magnet High School at 3470 Ridgecrest Road Ext.

Police, Madison County Sheriff's Deputies and the Tennessee Highway Patrol responded. A 17-year-old Liberty student was transported by ambulance to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital with a single gunshot wound to the thigh.

Police learned that victim was shot outside, in front of the school, as school was being dismissed for the day. The shooter was identified as a 16-year-old Liberty student.

Police quickly developed locations where the shooter might be and began checking addresses. Approximately 30 minutes after the shooting, officers took the shooter into custody at his grandmother's home on Cotton Grove Road in Madison County.

Officers continued to search the area on Cotton Grove Road in search of the gun. Around 5 p.m., a Jackson police dog found the gun used in the shooting.

The victim was admitted at the hospital and is in stable condition.
The shooter is being questioned by investigators and will be transported to the Madison County Juvenile Detention Center.
The motive remains under investigation.
