Eight-year-old Gardena boy whose dream it was to be a police officer, passes away

It is with a heavy heart that the men and women of the Gardena Police Department announce Erick Casillas passed away with his family by his side the morning of January 6, 2014.

On December 12, 2013, the Gardena Police Department had the pleasure of meeting eight-year-old Erick Casillas. Erick’s dream was to become a police officer when he grew up. Unfortunately for Erick, he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor late 2012 and was in the final stages of his brave battle with the disease.

Erick quickly stole the hearts of the men and women of the Gardena Police Department. Even though Erick was unable to walk and speak full sentences, the joy and sparkle in his eyes conveyed more than any words could ever do.

The men and women of the Gardena Police Department visited Erick at his home during the Christmas season. Erick was brought police memorabilia and his very own police officer badge. Erick even received his own junior police officer uniform and was taken on a ride-along on December 19, 2013.

“During the short time we got to know Erick and his family, he touched the hearts of the members of the Gardena Police Department very deeply. He will forever be a part of our police family. On behalf of the men and women of the Gardena Police Department, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the Casillas family”, said Chief Edward Medrano of the Gardena Police Department.

Funeral arrangements are still pending. Donations are sorely needed and appreciated. Anyone wishing to donate can visit www.juniorfoundation.org or make a deposit into a special account set up by the family at Chase Bank under the name Erick Casillas or Ana Erica Barragan (account number 437120921)
