West Covina PD’s “King-3 Project” K9 Fundraising reaches it’s goal

DATE OF RELEASE: December 28, 2013

Several months ago, the West Covina Police Department’s K9 Unit began working with members of the community in an effort to return the third Police Service Dog to the police department. The third police service dog position represents 7-day per week K9 coverage and a significant enhancement to the safety of the community and our Police Officers.

The West Covina Police Department is pleased to announce that through the hard work and generous contributions of our supporters, we have purchased a new Police Service Dog and were also able to fund the basic Police K9 training course. This project was accomplished exclusively through donations.

Reiko is an 18 month old Belgium Malinois, raised in Slovakia with a SVV1 title. Reiko was initially selected by a United States Military Special Forces group because of his high drive, intelligence and superior abilities. However, it turns out that Reiko did not much care for jumping out of high flying aircrafts.

K9 Reiko and his new partner, Officer Bryan Rodriguez, graduated from the basic K9 training course on Friday December 20th and have joined the ranks of the Patrol Division as 6-King-3. There are plans in place to certify Reiko in explosive ordinance detection in the near future, an effort that will greatly enhance the safety and security of our schools, malls and places of worship.

The West Covina Police Department’s K9 Unit was established in 1983 and routinely aids our Police Officers as well as officers in neighboring communities with locating and apprehending dangerous criminals. The WCPD K9 Unit has received countless awards to include national recognition in 2012 and 2013 for outstanding performance of duty.

Donations in support of the WCPD K9 Unit are being accepted on a continual basis. All donations are tax deductable. For more information please contact Lt. Benschop at 626-939-8684.
