Beware of SCE telephone scam
The Torrance Police Department has taken reports of suspects posing as Southern California Edison (SCE) Employees. Imposters have been calling SCE customers, mostly businesses, and telling them they must make immediate payment on past due bills or have their electric service disconnected. The suspects have had knowledge about SCE and the victims. The suspects are also demanding that payment be made through prepaid cash cards like Money Pak cards or Green Dot Cards.
If you receive a call from Southern California Edison regarding an unpaid bill and asking for payments in form of cash cards do not send the payment. SCE employees will never demand customers to pay via pre-paid cards or money order. Never reveal your credit card numbers or PIN numbers to anyone.
Customers suspecting a fraudulent call should ask for the caller’s name, department and business phone number. If the caller refuses to provide this information, customers should terminate the call and report the incident immediately to local police or SCE at 800-655-4555.
Remember to also ask for identification when a stranger comes to your door and claims to be a utility worker. Always ask for ID and if the person is acting suspicious call the Torrance Police Department at 310-328-3456 to verify the subject’s identity.
