Merced County Jail Escapee arrested in Gilroy

Details:
0n 12/17/2013 at approximately 5:30 pm, Gilroy Police Officers received information from the Merced County Sheriff’s Department that an inmate with a violent history had escaped from their jail and was possibly hiding in Gilroy. Jason Grant Hunwarsden had recently been convicted of multiple felonies involving the use of a weapon and was facing more than 20 years in prison. Hunwardsen escaped from his jail cell prior to his sentencing.
Gilroy Police Officers and Merced County Deputies developed credible information to suggest that Hunwarsden was hiding in a hotel room on the 8000 Block of Monterey Road. Because of Hunwarsden violent past; and the fact that he was a jail escapee/fugitive, the Gilroy/Morgan Hill SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Team was called to assist.
On 12/18/2013 at approximately 12:10 am, Hunwarsden surrendered to the SWAT Team without further incident. A loaded handgun was located at Hunwarsden’s arrest. Merced County Deputies took immediate custody of Hunwarsden and transported him back the Merced County Jail.
