A convicted felon on parole was arrested late Tuesday in connection with the theft of a handgun after trying to hide from Garland County sheriff’s deputies.
Charles Thomas Osborn Jr., 29, who lists an address of 2236 Sleepy Valley Road, was taken into custody shortly before 9:30 p.m. and charged with a felony count of possession of a firearm by certain persons, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and a misdemeanor count of theft by receiving, punishable by up to one year in jail.
Osborn, who is on parole from a 2012 felony conviction, remained in custody Wednesday with his bond set at $6,000 on the new charges, but he also had a parole hold on him. He is set to appear Dec. 17 in Garland County District Court.
According to reports, GCSD Sgt. Roy Williams and Deputy Richard Huffman responded to 400 Little Mazarn Road to help keep the peace after the resident, 24, had called to report his .45-caliber handgun being stolen and indicated he was worried about going home alone.
As the deputies arrived, they spotted a white male, later identified as Osborn, running from the residence at 400 Little Mazarn to the residence next door at 398 Little Mazarn, and he appeared to be trying to hide something.
They saw the suspect kneeling down in front of the doorway before jumping over a sofa that was in front of the door. As they approached the front door, the deputies saw the end of a handgun lying in the doorway. It was later determined to be the one reported stolen and they noted it had a round in the chamber.
The suspect, who was hiding under a bed inside, was called out and eventually came out on his own and told them he had only run because he knew he had a parole warrant for him. He admitted the gun was not his, but claimed he didn’t know how it got there.
A female witness, 28, who lived at the residence, told the deputies she had seen the suspect put the gun in the doorway before running in the house to hide.
