CITIZENS BE ALERT
Sheriff Robert Garcia would like to remind residents of a scam recently brought to light by the Santa Fe County Treasures Office. The scam involves illegitimate phone call solicitations. During the calls the caller claims to be from the County Social Services Department. The caller then attempts to collect property taxes that are due. The caller then requests personal and credit card information and claims if the property taxes are not paid immediately, the property will be foreclosed on.
Residents are reminded that:
• When Delinquent tax payers are contacted Credit Card or check information is never requested
• Santa Fe County does not have a Social Services Department
• Santa Fe County Treasurer’s Office does not have the authority to foreclose on any properties
Also in the wake of the unfortunate events in the Philippines, Sheriff Robert Garcia would like to warn Santa Fe residents, who plan to donate to typhoon relief efforts underway in the Philippines, to be on the lookout for fundraising scams. Santa Fe County residents who want to make charitable donations are urged to research organizations before making a donation to ensure the organization is legitimate and ensure the donation will directly benefit the victims in the Philippines.
