SHERIFF GARCIA: VOTERS' APPROVAL OF BONDS FOR CITY/COUNTY INMATE CENTER IS A 'WIN-WIN'

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia says the approval of County Proposition 1 in Tuesday's election will produce long-term benefits for county taxpayers and other residents.

“The complete but unofficial totals show that Harris County’s participating voters approved the $70 million bond issue to help build a county/city inmate processing center designed to make our justice system safer and more efficient. No matter the margin of victory, I am grateful that my staff and I can now move ahead – in cooperation with Commissioners Court and City Hall – on designing, building and operating the facility," the sheriff said.

“This project is efficient from the start because issuing the bonds will not require a tax increase. It will increase public safety later by getting city and country patrol officers back on the street faster after they deliver an accused criminal to the county jail. It will save money by reducing duplication and time delays in the booking and process. It will help reduce the rate at which some inmates get out of jail and break the law again, because it will enhance our ability to match outbound inmates with existing services for substance abuse, mental illness and homelessness," he added.

“A win is a win, and this project is a win-win for the Harris County public.”
