A tip from a citizen last week led authorities to a sex offender on the lam.
Michael Brandon Martin, 34, of Montford Cove Road in Marion, was wanted for felony failure to register as a sex offender.
He was convicted of one count of taking indecent liberties with a minor in McDowell County on Feb. 8, 1999 and is on the sex offender registry.
As a registered offender, Martin is required to verify his address in person at the Sheriff’s Office every six months. Capt. Ricky Crisp of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office said Martin failed to report, so a warrant was issued for him on Friday, Oct. 25.
On Thursday, Oct. 31, Lt. Bryon Crisp received a tip that Martin was in a vehicle traveling on Hankins Road. Bryon Crisp stopped the vehicle, found the suspect inside and arrested him on the warrant.
The lieutenant said, while searching Martin, he found a small amount of methamphetamine on him, as well as drug paraphernalia. Bryon Crisp charged him with felony possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Detective Andy Manis had also been searching for Martin in reference to a stolen motor vehicle.
Elaine Shook, of Morgan Road, reported on July 26 that she and Martin went to Davis Town Road in Old Fort to spend time with a friend.
Manis said Shook awoke the next morning and found her 1998 Honda Civic, worth $3,000, missing. The vehicle was found wrecked on Bat Cave Road.
The detective charged Martin with felony larceny of a motor vehicle and misdemeanor injury to personal property.
