A Hot Springs man was arrested after early Thursday after allegedly attacking another man late Wednesday, hitting him in the head with a rock. Matthew W. Matchett, 44, who lists an address of 107 Ida St., was taken into custody shortly after 1:30 a.m. and charged with third-degree battery, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail.
He was later released on $1,000 bond and is set to appear Nov. 12 in Garland County District Court.
According to the affidavit, Garland County sheriff’s Cpl. Robbie Swinney responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 200 block of Pinehill Road shortly after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and spoke to the victim, 53, who stated he was asleep when someone woke him by banging on his door. He opened the door and saw the suspect, identified as Matchett, described as an acquaintance, standing there with two large rocks. A fight between the men ensued and the victim was hit in the head with a rock.
Swinney noted the victim sustained a small cut on the left side of his head and the suspect had left the scene before he got there. About an hour later, Swinney received another call that the suspect was back at the victim’s residence spinning his tires. The deputy was in the area and when he got to the residence he saw the suspect’s vehicle leaving. He made a traffic stop on it at the corner of Highway 7 south and Mount Riante Road and took Matchett into custody without incident.
