Tyngsborough Halloween trick or treat hours / EEE warning

Date And Time For Halloween Tick-Or-Treating To Be Announced October 28th

The date and time of Halloween trick-or-treating in Tyngsborough will be announced on Monday, October 28th. If by noon on October 28th a hard frost has not occurred in the region, trick-or-treating hours will be on Sunday, November 3rd, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM. In the event that trick-or-treating hours occur on Sunday, November 3rd, all trick-or-treaters should plan to end at an indoor location at 4:30 PM. If a hard frost has occurred by noon on October 28th, trick-or-treating will be held on Thursday, October 31st from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This plan was set by the Board of Selectmen in conjunction with the Board of Health and Chief of Police at their October 21st meeting. A hard frost is defined as 2 or more hours of temperatures below 28 degrees Fahrenheit, or 3 or more hours below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Please note that “The Great Pumpkin Walk – Night of Lights” will be held on Saturday, October 26th from 5:45 PM to 8:00 PM at Tyngsborough Elementary School. If a hard frost has not occurred by Friday morning, October 25th, the event will be cancelled. Information regarding the event’s status will be circulated on Friday.

Tyngsborough continues to remain at “critical” threat level for mosquito-borne illness, as designated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in early September due to an equine case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and the discovery of a mosquito infected with West Nile Virus in Tyngsborough. Only a hard frost will end the threat; mosquito control spraying by the Town would not alter the restrictions on outdoor activities.

The public is advised to remain vigilant in protecting themselves and their family members from mosquito-borne illness. Outdoor recreational activity is recommended to occur only between the hours of dawn and dusk until a hard frost occurs, with evening activities currently recommended to end by 6:00 PM. Beginning October 27th, evening activities are recommended to end by 5:30 PM. Beginning November 3rd, evening activities are recommended to end by 4:30 PM. Beginning November 7th, evening activities are recommended to end by 4:00 PM.The following recommendations are in effect until the first hard frost.

The following are tips from DPH to protect yourself:

Schedule outdoor events to avoid the hours between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
When you are outdoors, wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and socks. This will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 (3-[N-butyl-N-acetyl]-aminopropionic acid) or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-menthane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions given on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin.

Keep mosquitoes out of your house by repairing any holes in your screens and making sure they are tightly attached to all your doors and windows.

Remove areas of standing water around your home.
