The West Covina City Council has approved the addition of two new police officer positions for the West Covina Police Department. This move raises the authorized strength of the police department from 90 to 92, and is the first increase to the authorized staffing of the department since 2007.
At the October 1st West Covina City Council Meeting, Councilmembers Andrew McIntyre and Robert Sotelo proposed the additional officers in a unified demonstration of support for public safety. The majority of the City Council Members approved the addition of the new officers at the October 15 City Council Meeting. The addition of the new officers will be used to augment front-line operations and will most likely be deployed to the Patrol Division, the most active and visible segment of the department. “The support demonstrated last night comes just two weeks after the approval of both a new mobile command post and a new public safety communications system for the police department,” said Police Chief Paul LaCommare. “We are very pleased with the support from the City Council and City Manager Chris Chung on these milestone improvements for the police department.”
The police department intends to begin recruiting for the new positions immediately. The funding for the new officers became possible due to cost savings through the refinancing of a municipal
bond, while both the command post and radio system were funded entirely through asset forfeiture, grant procurement and through a donation from the Castucci Foundation.
