LOCATION(S): Safeway, 555 Bancroft Avenue, San Leandro

INVESTIGATING DETECTIVE(S): Detective Sergeant Ted Henderson

SUSPECT(S): Charlie Johnson, 39 year old male who resides in Oakland (We are not releasing his photo pending further investigation).

On 09/23/13, approximately 10:55 AM, officers responded to an assault that occurred at Safeway, located at 555 Bancroft Avenue. The suspect described above approached the manager inside the store and for an unknown reason he violently punched the manager. The manager fell to the ground and sustained some serious injuries and was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment.

On 09/24/13, we released video surveillance footage of the incident to the media. Several media sources aired the footage during their news casts and tips immediately started coming in. Our detectives were also networking with neighboring agencies to assist them in identifying the suspect.

Information was developed that Charlie Johnson was the suspect in the incident. Our staff obtained a Ramey warrant for Johnson’s arrest. On 10/04/2013, officers of the Oakland Police Department located and arrested Johnson in his residence. Johnson was transported to jail and booked for the incident.

Lt. Randall Brandt stated, “This all would not have been possible without the assistance of a lot of people. This was a collaborative effort between media, citizens and neighboring police agencies. We successfully worked together to identify and arrest this violent suspect. This operation was in line with our United for Safety campaign which stresses the importance of all community groups working together to maintain and improve the quality of life we all deserve.”
