Sand Scorpions ORV Club cleans up Dunes, Yellow Zone now closed until July 2014

The Sand Scorpions Off Road Vehicle Club conducted their annual Moses Lake Sand Dunes Yellow Zone cleanup this past Saturday, October 5, 2013. Members of the Sand Scorpions volunteered over 133 man hours to collect over 10 yards of garbage and trash scattered throughout the area of the Moses Lake Sand Dunes known as the “Yellow Zone”.

The garbage was disposed of with dumpsters provided by grant funding through the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office, which also provides grant funding for maintenance, operations, and enforcement of the Moses Lake Sand Dunes through the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

The Yellow Zone cleanup by the ORV club has been an annual event for over 20 years and signals the closing of the Yellow Zone. The Yellow Zone is seasonally closed from October 1 to July 1 for nesting of migratory birds. The Yellow Zone is nestled between the north end of Potholes Reservoir and the Moses Lake Sand Dunes to the east and is owned by the Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife with small portions belonging to the Department of Natural Resources.
