Disaster Preparedness for Seniors and Individuals with Special Needs

Planning and preparing for a disaster can help your chances for survival.  Everyone has different needs.  Emergency kits should be made so that your personal needs are met and so that you and your family can be prepared.

Make a Plan:

  • Create a network of neighbors, relatives, friends and co-workers that can aid you in an emergency.  Make sure they have the proper equipment to aid you if necessary.

  • Keep specialized items ready and have supplies available.  Consider other personal needs such as eyeglasses, hearing aids and hearing aid batteries, wheelchair batteries and oxygen.

  • Keep a list of the makes and models and serial numbers of medical supplies used. Include operating information and instructions.

  • Make sure to have extra medication available.  Keep written copies of your prescriptions, over-the-counter medications and orders for medical equipment, including dosage, treatment and allergy information in your emergency kit.

  • Develop a Family Communications Plan.  Plan how you will contact family members if you are not together in time of an emergency.

  • Deciding to stay at your location or leave.  Depending on your personal needs and type of emergency or disaster decide on whether to stay at your location or to leave. In certain situations it is best to stay where you are.

  • Consider your pets.  You need to make arrangements for your pets in advance.  If you are required to go to a shelter, your animals will not be able to accompany you.  The city of Torrance has an Animal Disaster Team and may be able to assist you in finding shelter for your animals.

  • There may be times where you will be evacuated.  Plan where you would go and how you would get there.

Emergency Documents:

  • Include copies of important documents in your emergency supply kits such as family records, medical records, wills, deeds, social security number, charge and bank accounts information and tax records.

  • Have copies of your medical insurance and Medicare cards readily available.

  • Make sure that a friend or family member has copies of the documents.

  • Include the names and contact information of your support network, as well as your medical providers.

  • If you have a communication disability, make sure your emergency information notes the best way to communicate with you.

  • Keep these documents in a water proof container for quick and easy access.
