4pm,Wed: Deputy Involved Shooting Investigation, 1700 blk S. Burnside Av, LA
***UPDATE***
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide investigators are continuing their investigation surrounding the circumstances regarding a deputy-involved shooting that occurred today in the 1700 block of Burnside Avenue, Los Angeles, and have released the following information:
Deputies responded to a Burnside Avenue address in search of a felony suspect. The deputies observed a man who closely resembled the suspect and contacted him. The man reached into his waistband area and removed several objects, including narcotics, as well as a black object that he held in his hand.
Believing the man was arming himself, one of the deputies shot at him. The man ran to the rear of the residence and climbed over a wall. As the deputies followed, the man took a kneeling position facing the deputies with a black object still in his hand. Fearing that the man was about to shoot, both deputies fired their duty weapons at him.
The man was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The object the man was holding was later determined to be a black cell phone.
Whenever an Officer Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and it results in the wounding of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney in addition to investigations by Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these thorough investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
