WHAT: Safety Enhancement Zone Amendment and Start of School Enforcement

On August 20, 2013 City Council adopted amendments to the safety enhancement zones to include from 12:01 am on the first day of Cal Poly University’s housing move-in day until 7:00 am of the Monday following the first weekend of the fall academic school year.

Designated safety enhancement zones permit fines for open container, urinating in public, noise violations, unruly gatherings, and dangerous and deadly weapons to be doubled.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department will increase patrol staffing during the start of school, to include Move-In and Week of Welcome activities. Enhanced patrol deployments will be prepared to respond to the any large gatherings generated from the various WOW participants and other start of school year gatherings that often occupy the neighborhoods surrounding the Cal Poly Campus.

As part of that plan, SLOPD will team up with Cal Poly University Police to not only make a strong police presence, but to promptly address any adverse behaviors or quality of life issues in the neighborhoods.

The “Mustang Way” philosophy encourages students to create an atmosphere of mutual respect, to take responsibility for their actions and accept and appreciate that they are part of the community. Officers have been encouraged to share this philosophy as they interact with students, neighbors and others during this intensified patrol and enforcement time. The connectivity to Cal Poly and its mission establishes that we are working together to improving student, community and police relationships.

SLOPD will have a fully staffed deployment for WOW week and the first two weekends of school.
