School starts Today. Stress safety with your kids. Here are a couple of reminders:
Always look left-right-left before crossing the street and never run or dart out in front of a parked car. The driver will not be able to see you.
Whether you’re getting on or off the bus, stay 10 feet ahead of the bus when crossing the street in front of it and never walk behind the bus.
Reminder: Stop for School Bus Flashing Lights
The law says that any driver which approaches a school bus which has stopped on a street or highway and when it is displaying flashing red warning lights, shall stop the vehicle not less than 20 feet from the bus and shall remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or the operator extinguishes the flashing red warning lights. This doesn’t apply when driving in the opposite direction on a physically divided highway. A citation can be written based on an officer’s observation of the violation, or the bus driver’s report.
The citation for failing to properly stop for a school bus is $326.50 and 4 demerit points on your driver’s license. Let’s face it, kids don’t always think about traffic safety, so you will have to instead. Please help us get our kids to school and back home safely.
Reminder: School Crossing Speed Limits
It’s that time of year again, and children will be crossing the streets to get to school. Please be aware of the speed limit signs posted near schools and other crossings. These reduced speed limits are in effect when any of the following occur:
1. Any child is present.
2. A school crossing guard is in the roadway.
3. A school crossing guard is placing in or removing from the roadway a temporary sign or device that guides, warns, or regulates traffic.
Penalties are stiff for speed violations in these areas, ranging from $187.90 to $389.50. PLEASE slow down and give our kids a safe walk to school!
