The LA Sheriff's Malibu Search & Rescue Team responded to simultaneous hiker rescues Sunday, September 2, 2013.

The first, a female 17-year old from West Hills shown in the photo being reunited with a loved one, went missing off a trail near Tuna Canyon in Malibu.

While the team was searching for her a call for an injured male diabetic hiker came out near Eagle Rock in Topanga State Park. An LASD patrol helicopter spotted the distressed hiker, landed nearby, and flew him to an awaiting ambulance that transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

These were the 64th and 65th call outs for the busy Malibu Search and Rescue team in 2013.

Founded in 1977, the Malibu Search & Rescue Team is an all volunteer organization comprised of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Reserve Sheriffs Deputies, a select few Civilian Volunteer Specialists and Incident Support Personnel. Team members volunteer their time and efforts to help others and the team does not charge for rescues. The Team is a unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and is also a member of the prestigious California region of the Mountain Rescue Association.

Malibu Search & Rescue JURISDICTION - 187 square miles of the Santa Monica Mountains from the Los Angeles/Ventura County line to Pacific Palisades, the east face of the Santa Susana Mountains and the contract cities of Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Malibu, Calabasas and Hidden Hills. The Malibu Search & Rescue Team can also be sent anywhere in Los Angeles County to assist other LASD teams. Malibu SAR also responds anywhere in the state or country if requested to do so through the California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA).

Search and Rescue Team members are Los Angeles County Sheriff's Reserve Deputies who volunteer their time to help others for $1 a year, and who partner with sheriff’s civilian volunteers who volunteer for free. There are over 150 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. These rescuers were activated for over 550 search and rescue missions last year, making it one of the most active counties for search and rescue missions in the nation. Reserve deputies and civilian volunteers are supervised by full-time sheriff’s deputies. http://www.RFB.lasd.org
