School Bus, Children & Motorists Driving Safety

West Monroe Police would like to remind motorists that children will be returning to school on August 14, 2013. This means that we will once again begin seeing yellow school busses moving in and out of our neighborhoods and up and down or streets.

We would encourage everyone to be aware of these busses as they travel on our roadways making sudden stops and starts, loading and unloading caring our precious cargo.

As a reminder is it unlawful for motorists to pass a stopped school bus which has its “Red” lighting activated and “Stop” signs deployed which may be loading or unloading. All lanes of travel must come to a complete stop, within 30 feet of the school bus, including four lane roadways which are not physically separated with a barrier. (LA RS: 32:80)

We would also remind aggressive drivers to be patient as school busses approach a rail-road crossing, as they are required to come to a complete stop and check for opposing railroad traffic before proceeding onward. (LA RS: 32:173.1)

Our Department is looking forward to a fun and safe 2013-2014 school year.
