Deputy Uses Tourniquet on Injured Motorcyclist after Limo Collision, West Hollywood #LASD

During the early morning hours of July 20, 2013, a limousine driver made a left turn in front of a motorcyclist that was traveling eastbound on Sunset Boulevard, at the intersection of La Cienega Boulevard, which resulted in a collision. The motorcyclist suffered a severed leg.


Deputy Gardner of the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, arrived on scene and was faced with a life threatening situation. While waiting for the fire department to arrive, she immediately started rendering first aid to the wounded motorcyclist. Once first aid techniques were exhausted, she then applied a tourniquet to the motorcyclist’s leg. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and continued first aid. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital and was immediately taken into surgery in an effort to save his leg.


As of Wednesday, July 24, 2013, the motorcyclist’s leg was reattached. It was the opinion of medical personnel, that had the deputy’s arrival and the tourniquet not been applied in a timely manner, the chances of saving the leg, along with the life of the motorcyclist would have been minimal.
