HOLIDAY WEEKEND ANTI-DWI FOCUS YIELDS ARRESTS

Harris County sheriff's deputies arrested 29 drivers in the unincorporated areas of the county, including 11 repeat offenders, during a crackdown on drunk driving during the four-day period that started with July 4.

The drivers charged with driving while under the influence included seven who had a previous DWI and four who had two previous DWIs.

Sheriff's deputies also investigated three traffic fatalities that were caused by or related to alcohol use.

The crackdown included special assignment for up to 10 officers per 8-hour shift in the four-day period. Under state law, blood specimens were drawn from drivers in situations where such evidence was needed to establish blood-alcohol content.

"Enough's enough," Sheriff Adrian Garcia said. "We're working hard to get rid of our county's title as the number one place in the nation for DWI-related fatalities. We'll find other holiday periods through the year to make special efforts against DWI using 'no refusal' blood sampling. In the meantime our patrol deputies will remain on the lookout for DWI cases."
