DEPUTY NEEDS HELP! Public benefit for #LASD Dep. Devin Freeman July 10. at LAPD Mission Station 11a-10p #LAPD

Join Us in Helping Deputy Devin Freeman

Two months ago, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Devin Freeman became neighbors to LAPD Detective Ryan Verna, then two weeks later, Deputy Freeman was diagnosed with advanced-stage liver cancer.

"All of us in the neighborhood were shocked!" explained Det. Verna, who investigates homicides at the Mission Station.  "The bottom lines is, he's a neighbor, a good guy and a fellow law enforcement brother who is in a fight for his life."

Det. Verna has organized an 11-hour benefit to raise money for the Freeman family.  Dep. Freeman is making frequent trips to Philidelphia to receive experimental treatments with the hope of stopping the deadly illness.

For a donation of $5, patrons will get a Cupid's hot dog or burger, chips, soda, and dessert.  Sporting event tickets and memorabilia will also be raffled off.

All the proceeds will be given to Deputy Freeman and his family, which includes his wife and three young daughters.

"This event is so typical of Ryan to organize," said Lt. Paul Vernon, Det. Ryan's boss at the LAPD.  "Ryan knows first hand what it's like for a child to lose a cop-father at a young age.  We're very proud of him for stepping up to do this, and we want to support his efforts and the Freeman family."

Det. Verna is one of two LAPD officers whose father, Paul Verna, was killed in the line of duty in 1983 after he was shot during a traffic stop.

Deputy Freeman is assigned as a school resource officer at Canyon High School in Santa Clarita.

Questions regarding this benefit can be emailed to Det. Verna at [email protected]
