Norwalk station's Patrick Maxwell promoted to sheriff's commander.

NORWALK - The highlight for Patrick E. Maxwell during his 27-year career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has nothing to do with a huge drug bust or corralling a group of gang members.

It isn't even his promotion earlier this week to commander of the sheriff's South Patrol Division, after serving six years as captain of the sheriff's Norwalk station.

Instead, it was seeing a young man whom Maxwell had arrested three years ago, take part in La Mirada High School's graduation ceremony Wednesday night.

"I will remember this all my life," he said. "I know I've saved a life."

That young man, Marcos Orozco, couldn't agree more with that assessment.

"I am who I am today because of him," Orozco said.

Neither of them could know that four years ago when Maxwell, 52, arrested the then-14-year-old Orozco for tagging, that they would go shopping for a graduation suit, with the former picking up the tab.

"I call him my pops," Orozco said. "He showed me that I could do the right thing."

The turnaround for the young man, who admits he was headed for a life in a gang, was prompted by Norwalk's youth intervention PRIDE program, which Maxwell initiated nearly 10 years ago when he arrived at the station.
