Advisory

Warning: Telephone Scams are on the rise! NEVER provide your bank or personal info over the phone if someone calls & says you owe money!

The Montgomery Police Department has seen an increase in the number of reported telephone scams in recent weeks. The victims indicated they received a call from someone purporting to be an employee of a "Legal Team" calling in regards to a "Legal Matter". This individual will identify himself with a generic name such as John Smith and advise you that you owe money and are facing 3 federal counts of bank fraud if you do not take care of it immediately.

Do not be fooled! The scammers are professionals. They often call from "local" prefix phone numbers. That does NOT mean they are from our area. Do not fall victim. Outsmart them by being guarded and never providing personal information over the phone to someone you have never met or do not know.
If you are contacted by someone who is trying to collect a debt that you do not owe, you should:

• Contact your local law enforcement agencies if you feel you are in immediate danger;
• Contact your bank(s) and credit card companies;
• Contact the three major credit bureaus and request an alert be put on your file (Transunion, Equifax, and Experian)
• If you have received a legitimate loan and want to verify that you do not have any outstanding obligation, contact the loan company directly;
• File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
