On the evening of May 25, 2013, the Gilroy Police Department’s Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/ Driver’s License checkpoint within the city limits. Approximately 598 vehicles drove through the checkpoint. Forty-Three of those vehicle were diverted to the secondary checkpoint. Two drivers were arrested for DUI; a third was arrested for a warrant, twenty-nine citations were issued to drivers for driving unlicensed, and four citations were issued to drivers driving on a suspended license. Four vehicles were also towed (stored/impounded) from the checkpoint.
Funding for this checkpoint was provided to the Gilroy Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Gilroy Police Department’s Traffic Unit will continue to have these checkpoints. The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.
