SCV Sheriff's Deputies To Run In Memorial Torch Run - TODAY (05/18/13) - Fallen Officers Honored and Remembered LASD

Although we honor their memory and sacrifice every day, the month of May brings a special time each year when the law enforcement community comes together with family members, friends, dignitaries, community leaders , elected officials, and the community to recognize and remember our fallen heroes in special memorial ceremonies locally and throughout the Nation.

Throughout the month of May, Santa Clarita Deputies will participate in several memorial events in remembrance of fallen comrades at home and abroad. Paying personal tribute to all the law enforcement officers who have given their life in the line of duty and their families who have lost their sons, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers or other loved ones.

This year, Santa Clarita Valley Station will continue its tradition of participation in The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s 2013 Memorial Torch Relay Run, which will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 17 and will end on Sunday, May 19, 2013.

Starting in Monterey Park, Ca. at the Sherman Block Headquarters Building, participants will run 24 hours a day covering a course over 300 miles long and stopping at all mainland sheriff’s stations.

Santa Clarita Station’s portion of the course will begin at 7:00p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the intersection of Stevenson Ranch Parkway and Poe Parkway in Stevenson Ranch, Ca. This intersection is the site of the Deputy Hagop “Jake” Kuredjian memorial.

The runners will run east on Stevenson Ranch / McBean Parkway to Valencia Bl, to Citrus St., over to Magic Mountain Parkway, stopping in front of the sheriff’s station. From there, the runners will travel east on Valencia Bl to Sierra Highway and north to Agua Dulce. There they will be relieved by personnel from Palmdale Sheriff’s Station.

The memorial torch that the runners carry along the course will ultimately be used by Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca to light the ceremonial flame in the Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s –Sheriff’s Training Academy and Regional Service (STARS) Center in Whittier, California.

In a continuous effort to identify and honor all those who made the ultimate sacrifice, it has been discovered that yet another Santa Clarita Constable lost his life in the line of duty on January 4, 1909. Deputy Constable Charles A. De Moranville responded to a Newhall saloon in search of a suspect who had been involved in a fight. He discovered the suspect was no longer at the location. Constable De Moranville suddenly heard gunshots. He ran toward the direction of the shots and encountered the suspect near some railroad tracks. A gunfight ensued and Deputy Constable De Moranville was shot and killed. The suspect was later captured by Sheriff William A. Hammell.
